Bearish Engulfing
A small green candle followed by a large red candle whose body completely engulfs the prior session's body (open above the prior close, close below the prior open).
Bearish·Bearish reversal·2-candle·Requires a prior uptrend
Pattern shape
What it means
Day one's buyers got trapped: day two opened higher then sellers crushed it through the prior open. Demand exhausted; supply back in control.
Confirmation to wait for
Volume on the engulfing red candle should exceed the green candle's volume. Requires an actual uptrend preceding the setup.
Failure mode
Inside a sideways market, bearish engulfings reverse the next day or two. Trend context matters.
Detection rule
prev.close > prev.open (green) AND curr.close < curr.open (red) AND curr.open ≥ prev.close AND curr.close ≤ prev.open AND curr body > prev body. Prior 5-day uptrend.
